This gorgeous set was in a second-hand store in Gumna. It includes a roughly 10cm thick floor board with legs, marble bowls, agate and onyx go stones, and short stands for holding the bowls (probably taken from a shogi set).
The board was clearly an afterthought to the rest of the equipment. What I can tell from the pictures here is that it is an inverted center-cut (kiomote-itame), with nice cross-grains on the surface. The lighter surface color gives way to heartwood on the underside of the board - this color change is quite common with Matsu (pine) boards. Normally the decision to invert the board and put the grid on the lighter portion is an indicator that a knot was present in the heartwood, but unfortunately I do not have a photo of the underside to confirm that suspicion. It still has is original sticker that authenticates the permission to harvest the old tree it came from. The corners and edges look alright, for the most part. The grid shines in the glare of the light, so it looks like the standard raised lacquer.
The marble bowls are in good shape. The hollowed out stone is somewhat translucent so the light really makes them impressive. The lids are intact and there is minimal wear on the lip of the bowls where the lids sit.
The go stones are size 36 agate and onyx (about 10mm). There are almost a full set - 176 black and 177 white. I don't normally deal in these type of stones, but if I acquire any more in the future I could help complete the set.
The stands have some wear, but are a nice even brown color like Katsura. They match the board nicely, but were probably taken from a Shogi set.
All told, the set weighs 17 kilos. I would encourage the FedEx shipping upgrade, but I leave that decision to you.
International seamail shipping from Japan (to almost everywhere) is already included in the purchase price for free - however, this service takes up to 2-3 months. You may upgrade to FedEx shipping by adding this upgrade to your cart. This also means your items will have more room for padding and spend less time in transit, so they are less likely to be damaged by the shipping. In either case you will have a tracking number from the shipping service that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Please understand that this is a vintage item, so it is sold in an as-is condition.
