This set comes from an antique dealer in Nagano.
This board is a great specimen. It has very clean corners and edges, but it also has amazing grain and stands 23cm tall with the legs on. The endgrain needs to be cleaned up a bit to remove old wax (rubbing alcohol or turpentine should do fine) before being re-waxed. The cut is the most preferred cross-cut (kiura) which puts amazing waves in the center of the grid and lovely lines along the rest of the board for the eyes to follow. The warm orange heartwood color and super-thin tree rings tell me that it is a slow-growth tree. It is quite dense, so I would guess that it is Katsura.
The bowls are quince, which have turned more brown with age. Quince begins as more of a red color, so these are vintage or even antique.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 25 or 7mm thick. The orange highlights on the clamshell are consistent with Suwabute (Legendary) Flower-grade, but it is hard to tell without a backlight. The set wasn't counted, but when it arrives I will replace any missing or broken pieces so that you have 180 of each color - this is included in the purchase price.
International Seamail shipping with Japan Post (to almost everywhere) is already included in the purchase price - this service takes up to 3 months. You may upgrade to FedEx shipping by adding this upgrade to your cart - this gives your items more room for padding and reduces the transit time to 1-2 weeks. In either case, please allow 1-2 weeks for your package to clear customs, at which point we will email you a tracking number from the shipping service that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Please understand that this is a vintage item, so it is sold in an as-is condition.
