This fine goban came to Baduk Club from Tokyo.
The board is 13.5cm thick, and the ends have taken on a lovely candy color with age (and probably Camellia oil). It stands 26cm tall with the legs on. The underside has a signature inscription which indicates that it made by the respected craftsman Torayoshi Yoshida.
The board has some wear, but many scratches and white marks (old wax) will be far less noticeable after a cleaning and fresh coat of wax.
The material could be Kaya, but may be Agathis. It is certainly dense, about 14kg with the legs on, so I don't think it is Matsu (Pine) or Shinkaya (Spruce) but could be Taiwanese Cypress or even Katsura. It's hard to say, but I doubt Mr. Yoshida would have put his name on anything except a high-quality piece.
A center cut like this leaves beautiful end-grain where both players will sit, and straight lines along each side. The top and bottom have cross-grains in unique patterns like a fingerprint. based on the heartwood of the tree.
The corners and edges are pretty good, with some light chamfering on the underside where the edge may have been damaged. There are some small scratches, please see the photos for details. The legs are in amazing shape, which is a very good indicator that the board has been well-kept.
