This board comes from an Go & Shogi dealer in Osaka. It is very dense, and has a warm tone. It weighs 13kg, which is quite a lot for a board that is only 14cm thick. It stands 26.5cm tall with legs. The endgrain is beautiful and wavy, and the growth lines are thin. The cut is the most preferred cross-cut (kiura) which puts amazing waves in the center of the grid. The white wax residue is a good sign that the board has been cared for. There are some corner and edge blemishes, which you will see in the photos.
The bowls and stones come from a reseller in Fukuoka. The bowls look like mulberry because of their wide lines, but given how thin the lines are on the lid it makes me think they are Keyaki (zelkova) or Nara (oak). All these woods turn brown with age. They come with a modern Paulownia box for storage.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 32 (8.8mm thick). There are 180 white, with 2 extra spares; they look snow-grade. There are 181 black, which are slightly thicker at 9.1mm - this is common so that the matte black stones will not appear smaller side-by-side with the shiny white pieces. The clamshell could use a proper cleaning, so please visit our Care Instructions to learn about that.
