This awesome go board came to Baduk Club from a resale shop in Gunma, Japan.
The board is 17cm thick, and stands 30cm tall on legs. It is a quarter-sawn board, a Shihou-masa cut. This cutting style is the highest rated, because it creates straight lines on all 6 of the board's surfaces. Such a cut is only possible with a tree of immense diameter. It has an even yellow color typical of Shinkaya (Alaskan Spruce).
The board comes with a paulownia lid for protection, but the lid may need to be reglued in one or two places. Given the age of the board, it has very few incidental marks, so it is in very good condition. An inscription on the underside of the lid indicates that it was a birthday gift on May 20th, 1978.
A shogi floor board is included as a bonus. It looks like it is made of Katsura.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to nearly anywhere) is already included. This service reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days, and also allows more room for padding in order to avoid shipping damage. Please allow a week for Customs preparations, then a FedEx tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Because of the quality of this set, Surface shipping is not recommended, but it is possible (in 2 parcels with Japan Post) if you wish to reduce the cost by $120. Contact us with the chat widget to make such arrangements (this would be at your own risk, as damage is more likely to occur with the 3-month transit time).
