These medium-sized bowls come with standard-diameter stones with thickness about 4.5mm. This is nice for players that like the stones to sit flat like they do on a computer screen.
The bowls are a pleasant dark brown color. They were treated with a Monkey Wax polish and given 2 weeks to cure. Some tiny insect holes had been bored into the bowls in the distant past, and these have been filled with beeswax. They bowls are dense, but dark with age and care so it is hard to determine the type of wood.
The lids have a particularly interesting shape. One has a convex center while the other is concave, to tell the bowls apart. Over time the wood loses moisture and shrinks, so unfortunately the lids no longer fit perfectly onto the bowls. Paper on the underside of each lid (with Japanese kanji) has been kept intact.
The 180 white stones are Japanese clams, with a wonderful variety in striations and patina. I would call them Snow-grade lines, but they are Japanese clams so they have lines far denser than you find on stones made from the giant clams of Mexico. Such clams are no longer harvested, so this set is almost certainly am antique and it has some imperfections. The 181 black are slate, and they are slightly wider than the white stones, it is common to have the black slightly larger like this. As you can see the black stones fill the bowl just a bit more than the white.
