This lovely set includes refurbished Go Stones and Go Bowls.
The stones are size 32/33 Slate & Shell - most are a bit thicker than 8.8mm.
The 180 clamshells are Suwabute stones, Japanese clams that are not graded like Mexican clams. They have lines much more dense than Mexican clams because they grow far slower, and are no longer harvested due to depletion. My lightbox struggled to illuminate some of them because of their density. A phone flashlight will show an orange color, where a Mexican clam will look yellow (kind of like high-quality egg yolks). They have a cream-color patina, so they are not as pure white as Mexican clamshell. Suwabute shells may have have orange coloration on the underside, "purple heart" lines, or other unique characteristics.
The clamshell stones were been cleaned per our Care Instructions. For the shell stones, this meant a week-long soak in h2o2 and a rinse with distilled water, then being buffed with iso-paraffin wax.
The 181 slate stones are slightly larger. This is preferred, as it accounts for black's slimming effect. They were washed with soapy water, rinsed with distilled water, but have not yet been buffed with mineral oil (we leave this choice to you).
The bowls are Keyaki (zelkova), XL size. They were not refurbished in our Colorado workshop, as their original finish is still in very good shape. They catch the light very well, and fit the stones comfortably.
This is one of our Vintage products. If you want a new set of Hyuga Suwabute stones that will be pure white and without any wear & tear, we recommend visiting Mr. Kuroki or HyugaGoBoardStone, where they are available in the $1500-$4000 range.
