This Goban set came to Baduk Club from an antique shop in Kagawa, Japan.
The go board has wavy endgrain that is unmistakably Kaya with its sweet scent. The cutting style is Kiura. This plain-sawn provides wavy end grain on the ends where the players will sit, straight lines on the sides, and ripples like waves on the playing surface. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands 28cm tall on its legs, and it comes with a Paulownia lid (the lid could be repaired with wood glue).
The original wood must have had some knots, as there are several repairs visible. There is also some grime and white wax residue, so some scrubbing and a fresh application of paste wax would really improve the color and lustre of the wood.
The bowls are Chestnut with their original finish.
The stones are slate and shell, size 34 (about 9.5mm). There 181 black stones are slightly larger than the 176 white to account for black's slimming effect. They could use a cleaning, please refer to our Care instructions.
