This Goban set came to Baduk Club from a secondhand shop in Shimane, Japan.
The board is make of a single piece, cut in a Plain-sawn style. This is Kiura, the preferred Center cut when a tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This style shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 20cm tall with the legs on, or they can be removed if you want to use it as a table board. There wax on the side has collected quite a bit of dirt, so the board would benefit from a thorough scrubbing.
Looking past the dirty exterior, the board has nice edges and corners. It weighs 8.3kg, so it is quite dense. The density and color point to the wood being Katsura.
The go bowls look like Cherry or Keyaki.
The stones are size 25, about 7mm thick. They are made of slate and clamshell, but were not measured or counted. It is likely that some of the stones are chipped.
This is a vintage item. Other small defects may exist.
