This shogi set came to BadukClub from a go and shogi dealer in Kanagawa, Japan.
The board is 14cm thick, and stands 26cm tall on legs. It has an even yellow color and is probably Japanese Cypress. The growth rings are far more dense than usual, and it weighs 9kg. It is a quarter-sawn board, a Shihou-masa cut. This is the highest rated cutting style for boards because of the straight lines it produces on every surface.
The surface of the board is easy on the eyes, with a nice even color. It has a traditional raised-lacquer grid. Overall it is in excellent condition for a board that is dozens of years old, where some wear is to be expected. The legs look a bit warmer in color than the board, they may be Katsura.
The shogi pieces were made by Sakae. You can see that they were engraved and then painted, black on the front and vermillion on the back. The pieces come with a decorative silk bag and a paulownia box for storage.
