This Goban set came to Baduk Club from a resale shop in Tokyo, Japan.
The board is most likely Matsu (pine), given the warm-color heartwood with different colors. It was made with a plain-sawn cutting style (Kiura-itame), the most preferred of Center cut when the tree is not large enough to be quarter-sawn. This cutting style shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides, while the surface has a unique cross-grain pattern like waves on water.
The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 20cm tall with legs. White wax residue on the sides and bottom are a good sign, this can be wiped clean with a cotton cloth.
The bowls are Chestnut. They are XL size and have their original finish.
The stones are size 30-32 glass (8mm-9mm). They were not counted. If pieces are missing or broken you can email us to purchase replacements.
