This awesome goban was acquired in Oita Prefecture from a private seller.

The board is 13.5cm thick, and stands 28cm tall with legs. It comes with its original protective paulownia lid. Due to its size it may need to be upgraded to Express shipping.

It is an extremely dense wood but I have trouble identifying it. With the cover and legs, it weighs about 16kg. It has an unusually thick pattern of growth rings, which make the sides of the board quite beautiful, like mulberry wood. I would guess that it is Horse Chestnut, based on the contrast in the heartwood color.

The center-cut (Kiura) beautifully shows off the endgrain and the heart of the tree. This is one of the highest-regarded cuts for fine boards.

The corners and edges are quite clean. The protective paulownia lid has done its job - it also bears a sticker of a go board maker, but they do not seem to be in business anymore.

The underside shows signs of white wax residue, which is a good indicator of being well-cared-for. It should brush off easily with a dry cloth. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more. There are a couple small scratches on the board, please see the photos for details. Those may be far less noticeable after being rewaxed.

The legs look like Katsura, but one seems lighter than the others in the photos. I do not know if that is just the glare in the photo. If it is a replacement, a colored-wax finish would be the perfect thing to help make it more consistent with the other 3.

The glare highlights that the grid-lines are slightly raised, a result of being hand-lacquered by tachimori (youtube link).

    Shipping Details:
Japan Post Surface shipping from Japan (to almost everywhere) is already included in the purchase price. You can add our FedEx Upgrade to your cart to reduce the actual transit time to only 5 business days - this does increase the overall cost, but provides more room for padding and minimizes the risk of shipping damage. In either case, a tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.

Please understand that this is a Vintage item sold in as-is condition.
