This 14.5cm thick goban was from a home in Chiba. It is a lovely cross-cut (shihou-masa) that provides parallel lines along the ends, the playing surface, and the underside. A cut like this is only possible on an immense trunk. There are beautiful waves to the lines, and a rich luster.
It is not as dense as Kaya, but it still weighs 12.5kg. From the glare of the light you can see that the grid-lines are slightly raised, a result of being hand-lacquered by tachimori (check out this tachimori youtube video).
The underside has an inscription that indicates this board was presented as a retirement gift on April 20th, 1981 after 30 years of service. Gifts like this are usually new items, and that was 40 years ago, so the board has probably only ever been owned by one person and taken care of very well.
The legs are a light color, possibly ginkgo? They show white wax residue, as does the end of the board - this is a good thing, indicating the board has been waxed so it doesn't dry out. I'd recommend cleaning the legs off with a dry towel, along with the board, and reapplying a wax paste to both.

If you would like to bundle this item with bowls and stones, please contact us. We can bundle existing inventory or do a Custom Order if you have something else in mind.
It may be possible to *downgrade* the shipping to Seamail to save $180 on the price (if the legs can be removed and it can be packed securely enough for the 2-3month journey). Please contact us if you would like to purchase the board with that option.
FedEx International Priority shipping to the US from Japan is already included in the purchase price for free, a $300 service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days. This does represent a majority of the overall cost, but is necessary given the board's size. The upside is that a FedEx box has sufficient room for padding in order to avoide shipping damage. A FedEx tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Please understand that this is a vintage item, so it is sold in an as-is condition.
