This awesome goban came to Baduk Club from a hobby shop in Okayama Prefecture.
The board is 14.8cm thick, and stands 27cm tall with legs. It comes with its original protective lid.
It looks like a textbook species of Kaya, with these indicators:
- The Cut: it is a Center Cut (kiura) to show off the heart of the tree. This is the highest-regarded cuts for fine boards when the tree is not big enough for a Cross Cut.
- The Grain: the lines are wavy, unlike shin-kaya and most matsu. They are also quite thin; Kaya is a slow-growing tree.
- The Size (of the trunk): You can see that the rings radiate outward instead of forming semi-circles. This was an absolutely tremendous tree.
- The Color: A warm yellow, the heartwood is a uniform color. There is a ton of burl which gives amazing waves to the grains.
The corners and edges are quite clean. There are a couple small scratches and cracks, please see the photos for details. The protective lid has done its job but isn't in perfect shape itself. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more about caring for this board.
The grid-lines shine in the glare of the camera flash so you can see they are slightly raised, a result of being hand-lacquered by tachimori (check out this tachimori youtube video).
Purchased new, such an item would cost about $2000-$4000 today.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to everywhere) is already included in the purchase price for free, a service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days. This is a big part of overall cost, but necessary to provide sufficient room for padding which is not possible with Japan Post Seamail. Please allow 1-2 weeks for the board to be packed and to clear Customs, then a FedEx tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Please understand that this is a Vintage product.
