This board comes from an antique dealer in Kagawa. It stands 28.5cm tall with legs. It has very thin growth-lines, so it is dense and has a warm tone. Normally those signs would point toward Katsura, but I think it is Matsuju (pine). The endgrain is beautiful and wavy, showing off the most-preferred cross-cut (kiura) which puts amazing waves in the center of the grid. The white wax residue on the underside is a good sign that the board has been cared for. The old wax will mostly wipe away with a dry cloth, and a fresh coat of wax will make this board glow - see our Care Instructions for more on that. There is a protective lid which is missing a lower panel, but it has kept the edges and corners in great shape.
The bowls and stones come a Go and Shogi shop in Kanagawa. The bowls look like mulberry because of their wide lines, but the bright tone makes me think they are Keyaki (zelkova). They have their original finish.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 32 (8.5-8.7mm thick). There are 180 white, plus 2 extra spares; they look snow-grade Mexican clams. There are 181 black, plus 2 extra spares, and are slightly thicker at 8.8-9.1mm - this is common so that the matte black stones will not appear smaller side-by-side with the shiny white pieces.
