This go set came to Baduk Club from a pawn shop in Atsugi City. It includes a 17cm floor board (29cm with legs), mid-tier go bowls, and slate and shell go stones.
The board has a beautiful cross-cut (tenchi masa). It also has a really warm orange tone, which makes me think it might be Kaya - it's really hard to tell the difference in this case, but the evenness of the lines makes me assume Shinkaya. The endgrains have beautiful compression waves, though.
This cutting style puts the grains of the tree in even, parallel lines across the ends, surface, and bottom, while the sides will have lovely cross-grains. You'll need to take a dry cloth to do cleaning on the end-grain, but don't be put off by the white wax residue there - it's actually a very good sign that the board was regularly waxed.
Please see my Care Instructions for details on caring for the board and cleaning the stones.
The go bowls look like Keyaki (Zelkova), but may be Lieden or Boxwood. They are most likely size L or XL, but were not closely examined.
The stones are slate and shell, approximately size 25. They are a bit dirty and should be cleaned. There is a full set and the grade looks like Snow. They were not closely examined, but I will send replacements for any pieces that turn out to be badly chipped or broken and this is included in the purchase price.
All told, the set weighs 20kg.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to almost everywhere) is already included in the purchase price (a $300 value), which reduces the transit time to only 5 business days. This also means your items will have more room for padding and spend less time traveling, so they are less likely to be damaged by the shipping.
Please understand that this is a vintage item.
