This 18cm thick goban was removed from a closet in Fukui prefecture where it had apparently been sitting unused for 20 years. It weighs 17kg, which makes it quite a formidable board. It is a lovely cross-cut (shihou-masa) that provides parallel lines along the ends, the playing surface, and the underside. A cut like this is only possible on an immense trunk, so it comes with a sticker authenticating that the logging company had the necessary permission to harvest this tree.
It was clearly a very slow-growing tree because the growth rings are extremely thin and the board weight is not far off from its height, making it quite dense - though not as dense as kaya. The grid-lines are slightly raised, a result of being hand-lacquered by tachimori (check out this tachimori youtube video).
The legs are a wonderful warm color with good lines. They show good signs of white wax residue. I'd recommend cleaning them off with a dry towel, along with the board, and reapplying a wax paste to both.

The stones are slate and shell, approximately size 30, and are only 2 white pieces short of a full set which I will send separately. They weren't measured or photographed very well, so you will need to do that when they arrive and I cannot promise that they are above Utility grade. Please measure them and take some photos so that I can replace any missing or broken pieces with the best match possible - this is included in the purchase price.
All told, this set weighs 21kg.
FedEx International Priority shipping to the US from Japan is already included in the purchase price for free, a $300 service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days. This does represent a majority of the overall cost, but is necessary given the board's size. The upside is that a FedEx box has sufficient room for padding in order to avoide shipping damage. A FedEx tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
