This thick goban set came to Baduk Club from Chumami at her Mamekichi shop.
The board is 20cm thick, which is incredibly large. It stands 32cm tall with 12cm legs. It comes with its original protective lid. It looks like katsura or matsu, with a Center Cut (kiura) to show off the heart of the tree. This is the highest-regarded cuts for fine boards when the tree is not big enough for a Cross Cut. My best guess at the wood type is Matsu, given how it shifts lighter in tone away from heartwood down in the lower corners. However, it could also be Katsura given how orange-red the majority of the heartwood is.
The corners and edges are incredibly clean, so it is in excellent shape. Wisps of white wax residue are visible on the top, sides, and legs, which is a good sign that the board has been cared for. The protective cloth cover and paulownia lid have done their job. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more about caring for this board.
The reddish-brown bowls have great lines and are textbook Karin (quince), a wood with great longevity due to its density and high moisture content. Sometimes this wood is called Indian Rosewood, and it will subtly change from orange-red to red-brown to brown over time. There is some rubbing on the original shellac finish. They are size XL according to their original box (see photo), but it is cardboard in very bad shape and will probably be discarded.
The stones are slate and shell, but were not measured or counted. They look like size 30 in need of a good cleaning, and a mix of Utility, Moon, and Snow-grades. If any of the stones are broken or missing, they will be replaced from my Colorado workshop so that you have 180 of each color and this is included in the purchase price.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to everywhere) is already included in the purchase price for free, a service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days. This is a big part of overall cost, but necessary to provide sufficient room for padding which is not possible with Japan Post Seamail. Please allow 1-2 weeks for the board to be packed and to clear Customs, then a FedEx tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Please understand that this is a Vintage product. Additional photos of the board may be possible once the warehouse has time to safely unbox it to examine the endgrain.
