This humble go set comes from southern Japan, the board from Okayama and the bowls from Fukui. According to the seller, the bowls belonged to a Honinbo disciple during the Taisho era, but they did not specify which Honinbo nor which disciple.
This board is well cared for, as you can see from its clean edges and corners. It has white wax residue on the sides and bottom, a good sign that it has been regularly oiled and waxed. It looks like Katsura because of the deep heartwood color and also because of the weight - 8kg. It is a lovely cross-cut (kiura-itame), the highly-valued cut that shows heartwood in the center of the board and has straight lines on the edges and sides. It could be matsu, but the ripples of the grains on the surface are quite gentle and are going in multiple directions (in my experience, matsu is usually more pointed and in one direction), but it does have a shift in color towards the lower corners of the board which is more consistent with matsu. In any case it is a slow-growing tree because the rings are quite close together and it is very dense.
The bowls have an amazing brown patina from age. It would be up to you whether you want to keep them antique-looking or to refinish them in some way. Please refer to my Care Instructions.
The stones are slate & shell, approximately 5-6mm thick (size 20). They were not counted, but if you contact me when they arrive I make sure you get enough replacements for a full set so you don't have to play with broken pieces.
All told, the set weighs 12kg.
International seamail shipping from Japan (to almost everywhere) is already included in the purchase price for free - however, this service takes up to 2-3 months. You may upgrade to FedEx shipping by adding this upgrade to your cart. This also means your items will have more room for padding and spend less time in transit, so they are less likely to be damaged by the shipping. In either case you will have a tracking number from the shipping service that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Please understand that this is a vintage item, so it is sold in an as-is condition.
