This is a fabulous lacquered goban. It came to BadukClub from a private home in Hyogo, Japan.
At 12kg, the wood is probably Shin-kaya, known for its incredibly straight lines and warm color. Because of the lacquer, we cannot see the endgrain. It is most likely a Kiura cut (plain-sawn), because some heartwood ripples are visible under the playing grid.
It has been carefully lacquered black, and decorated gold with designs of hawks perching and fishing. Far in the distance, little ships are pulling into port.
