This goban set came to Baduk Club from a private home in Chiba, Japan. The seller says it belonged to his father.
The board is 17cm thick, and stands 29cm tall on legs. It has an even yellow color typical of Shinkaya (Alaskan Spruce). It is a quarter-sawn board, a Tenchi-masa cut. This cutting style creates straight lines on most of the surfaces, so the board is easy on the eyes and only some cross-grain heartwood appears on the sides. This is one of the highest-rated cuts for go boards.
The board is in great condition, with regular wear and tear. It comes with a protective paulownia lid. It would still be good to clean and wax the board, unless your climate is as humid as Japan's. The board would really glow with a fresh coat of Monkey Butter. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more. The legs are a darker color (probably Katsura).
The bowls look like size XL camphor, which catch the light in unique and interesting ways. The grain pattern is similar to bowls made of quince.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 30-34 (8mm-9mm). They were not measured or counted, but we can help replace pieces if it is not a full set.
This is a Vintage item.
