This 14.1cm go board was refurbished in our Colorado workshop, including a coat of special linseed oil and later a coat of Monkey Wax. Photos include some from before and during the refurbishing process.
The board is lovely, and the playing surface is in really good shape. It has a reddish brown heartwood color that is very consistent across the entire block. Given the density and color we think it is Katsura, but it may be a different species such as Taiwanese Cypress or something similar. Pointing towards its high quality are the octagonal notches on the underside cut for the legs, a very unique touch. It also has a traditional grid made of raised lacquer.
The cut is Kiomote (itame), a cross-grain cut that show the log's growth rings on the endgrain. In carpentry terms this would be called a Plain-sawn board. On the sides, there are straight grains, and the top and bottom have cross-grain patterns. Generally a Kiura (itame) is more preferable, but in this case there was a defect in the heartwood that required repair, so that became the underside of the board. A second defect in the endgrain was also repaired.
The edges are and corners are pretty good, with minimal rounding from impacts over time. Defects are visible in the photos, so please refer to those. The board was sanded except for the grid, which was preserved in its original state. Hard boards have been added to the corners of the box for protection during shipping.
This is a vintage item.
