This wonderful set of go equipment was refurbished in our Colorado workshop.
The stones are size 25 slate & shell, about 7mm thick. They have been cleaned per our Care Instructions. As you can see from the photos, the 180 white pieces are Japanese clamshell. The 181 black pieces are slate, slightly larger than the white to account for black's slimming effect.
The white stones are rare, as Japanese clamshell is no longer harvested. They are called Suwabute shells, and their fine lines are beyond the quality of Snow-grade Mexican clamshell. They are more dense as they grow more slowly in the colder waters of Japan, and mineral inclusions cause occasional orange and purple lines. The stones were washed, soaked in h2o2 for a week, and rinsed with distilled water. The black stones were washed and rinsed with distilled water, but they have not been buffed with mineral oil so we leave that option to you.
The bowls are Kokutan (ebony), a dense and rare wood in the rosewood family. The bowls were cleaned of their original finished and buffed with a Monkey Butter polish. They feature beautiful black and brown stripes. They were fashioned exquisitely, with perfect punts/kick-ups. To help protect the stones from the hard wood and from potential discoloration, we recommend that you add a small mat or liner inside each bowl.
An old-fashioned Paulownia storage box is included, along with a pair of yellow Japanese textile squares.
