This lovely set includes Japanese Go Bowls and slate and shell Go Stones. This set was refurbished in our Colorado workshop.
The stones are size 32 (about 9mm thick) slate & shell. The 180 white stones are a clear white. Lit from behind by a flashlight, they have a dense orange color inside which is indicative of Japanese clamshell but they could also be Mexican clamshell. The lines are a variety of grades, so these pieces were likely taken from the newer part of the clam near the hinge. They were soaked in h2o2 for a week, then rinsed with distilled water.
The 181 slate stones are slightly larger, to account for black's slimming effect. They have been washed and rinsed with distilled water. They have not been buffed with mineral oil, we leave this option to you.
The bowls are dark in tone, like Mulberry, but they have dense and straight lines like Keyaki (Zelkova). I think that they are Keyaki that have been treated or ebonized in some way. At XL size they fit the stones comfortably. They have been cleaned of their original finish and treated with Monkey Butter.
