This goban came to Baduk Club from a secondhand dealer in Kanagawa, Japan.
The board is a single-piece, cut in the Plain-sawn style (Kiomote). This cutting style shows off the beautiful growth rings where the players sit. The sides feature straight lines, and the playing surface is unique like a fingerprint. A tree is plain-sawn like this when it is not large enough to be quarter-sawn or rift-sawn, and the knottier face of the wood is selected for the underside.
The wavy growth rings are unmistakably Kaya, and it carries the unique sweet scent of that wood. Another high quality indicator is the raised lacquer grid (tachimori style) in excellent shape. Finally, it is very dense - at 17cm thick the board weighs 17kg. It stands 30cm tall on its legs.
The edges and corners look good, likely thanks to the protective Paulownia lid. The surface shows indents from stones played with enthusiasm - this board has seen countless games.
White wax residue on the end of the board and the legs is a good sign. This wax will clear up with wiping by a clean cotton cloth. The legs are Katsura. They are in good condition.
