This set came to Baduk Club from a toy shop in Fukuoka.
There are 181 black and 180 white pieces. The black are slate, about 10.5mm. The white are clamshell, about 10.1mm . It is common for the black to be larger than the white - if they are made the same size then the shiny white stones appear bigger. The grade of the stones is unclear, but looks to be moon-grade.
The Japanese go bowls are textbook Kaya, size XL. They have a lovely orange color and their original finish, so it is up to you whether you want to scrub off the old shellac (of course, we recommend oiling and waxing bowls for longevity, please see our Care Instructions).
The bowls fit the stones comfortably, with plenty of room to spare. There are also white cloth bags for holding the stones, which help cushion the stones and keep the bowls clean.
This set is still in Japan, it has not been refurbished in our Colorado shop. This is why we can offer it at this price.
