This Japanese go board was shipped to Colorado for refurbishing. It has the unmistakable sweet scent of Kaya, and the engrain confirms this assessment with dense and wavy growth lines.
This is a hagi board, made of 3 pieces of wood joined together. This type of construction helps prevent warping that may occur when a thin board is made of a single piece.
The board carries marks from decades of use, such as scratches and rounded corners. The wood was a bit dry, so after sanding it on 5 sides we treated it with Monkey Butter. The raised lacquer grid was kept intact, so there are still rough spots on the top.
