Help beginners fall in love with the game with a high-quality 9x9 board!
With 3 wood types, you have an array of colors to choose from. The wood was sourced in Denver in early 2026, cut by Solomon, laser etched, and finished with Monkey Butter (mineral oil and beeswax).
Each board is approximately 8" x 8.5", and almost 0.8" thick (about 2cm). The grids are based on standard Japanese dimensions, with cells 22mm x 23.7mm. A 9x9 grid is provided on the top, with an additional 7x7 grid on the bottom. The lines are laser etched, so if the board becomes scratched over time, it can simply be sanded and refinished to be good as new.
The board you receive may vary from those in the photos. Please use the drop-down menu to select a wood type and quality.
Wood types:
- Soft Curly Maple - this is a pale white wood. It features lovely grain and chatoyance. Most of the maple boards are plain-sawn. The wood is dense and hard.
- Pecky Cedar - this yellow wood is a rare breed, loved for its rustic look and light weight. The medium tone is easy on the eyes and provides a high contrast for black and white go stones.
- Quarter-sawn Sapele - this is African Mahogany, a medium brown color. It is dense and hard, featuring straight grain with some chatoyance.
Quality:
- Excellent - Free of defects.
- Good - Free of major defects, but may have noticeable minor defects.
- Poor - A major defect (usually on the 7x7 side), or several minor defects.
