This Goban set came to Baduk Club from an antique dealer in Hiroshima, Japan.
The go board has a warm-color heartwood that is a consistent orange. This points towards Kaya or Katsura. It is a Kiura cut, a plain-sawn style that shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 20cm tall with legs. It was well-kept, with a cloth cover and paulownia lid.
The bowls are Chestnut wood or something similar. They may have an urushi lacquer finish that causes them to look a bit like Pagoda wood. They come with an old-fashioned storage box - an old object like this may need to be reglued, as it is constructed with only wooden pegs and no metal fasteners.
The stones are slate and shell, size 25 (about 7mm). There is nearly a full set of 180 black and 179 white.
