This Goban came to Baduk Club from a secondhand shop in Fukuoka, Japan.
The board has a warm-color heartwood that is a consistent yellow/orange. It is also very dense. These indicators point towards Katsura, but could be something similar like Matsu (pine).
The cut is Kiura, the most preferred of Center cut when the tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This is a Plain-sawn cutting style, which shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides.
The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 21cm tall with Katsura legs, or they can be removed if you want to use it as a table board. There are signs of use, so the board would benefit from a scrubbing followed by a reapplication of paste wax.
