This goban set came to Baduk Club from an antique shop in Okayama.
The board is 15cm thick, and stands 27cm tall on legs. It has an even red-brown color typical of Katsura, though it could be Matsu (Pine). The endgrain is very dense and the dark tone of the wood is even throughout, matching the color of the legs.
It is a plain-sawn board, a Cross Cut in the Kiura style. This style presents the tree rings to the players where you will sit at the end and can enjoy the endgrain, while the sides will have straight grain. Heartwood irregularities will appear on the playing surface like a fingerprint, as well as on the underside.
The corners and edges are in good condition. It would be good to wax the board, at minimum, unless your climate is as humid as Japan's. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more.
The bowls look like Cherry, but could be Mulberry. They come with a protective storage box made of Paulownia, though it is dusty from age and could use a good scrubbing.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 33 (9.3mm). The clamshell stones look to be moon-grade. If there are not enough for a full set, we will provide additional pieces once the set arrives and you have a chance to count them.
This is a Vintage item.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to nearly anywhere) is already included. Because of the quality of this set, Surface shipping is not recommended, but it is possible (in 2 parcels with Japan Post) if you wish to reduce the cost by about $120. Contact us with the chat widget to make such arrangements.
