This thick goban set came to Baduk Club from a shop in Fukuoka.
The board is 19cm thick, which is incredibly large. It stands 31cm tall with 12cm legs. It comes with its original protective lid. It looks like Shin-Kaya, which is Alaskan Spruce. It has a Ten-Masa or Oi-Masa cut, which provides straight lines on the top and endgrain - it is hard to tell which cut this is because a photo was not taken of the underside. These plain-sawn cuts are the highest-regarded cut for fine boards, and require an enormous piece of lumber to achieve.
The corners and edges are in good shape, protected by the paulownia lid. There are some subtle signs of the boards quality including the raised lacquer grid and an inscription on the lid. The inscription is from around New Years, 1985, and has 6 surnames, probably indicating that it was given as a gift (perhaps the recipient retired from their company, or achieved a certain Dan rank, etc). The board will look a lot better with a thorough cleaning, if you're up for it. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more about caring for this board.
The orange-brown bowls have great lines and are textbook Keyaki (zelkova), a wood with great longevity due to its density and high moisture content. They look size XL or XXL, and come with a protective paulownia storage box. The box looks to be in very good shape, and has an inscription on the underside from 1990 (probably a purchase date).
The stones are slate and shell, but were not measured or counted. They look like size 34 or 36 in need of a good cleaning. If any of the stones are broken or missing, they will be replaced from our Colorado workshop so that you have a full set and this is included in the purchase price (please measure them with a caliper and email us).
All together, this set weighs 24kg.
This is a Vintage product.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to everywhere) is already included in the purchase price for free, a service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days.
It may be possible to downgrade to Surface shipping by removing the legs and sending them separately with the bowls and stones in a second parcel. Please contact us to request this, as it is done at your own risk of shipping damage.
In either case, please allow a week for the board to be packed and to clear Customs, then a tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
