This set came to Baduk Club from Mr. Kenichi, who we met on a peer-to-peer network.
There are 180 black and 180 white pieces, about 9mm to 9.2mm. They are slate and shell. The clamshells were washed and gently polished. The black are slightly larger than the white (you can tell that they fill their bowl much higher), and this is normal - if both colors are made the same size then the shiny white pieces will appear larger than the black when they are played side by side on the board.
The Japanese go bowls look like a kind of Mulberry, but may be something similar like Keyaki (zelkova) or Camphor. They have a very common, thick construction, so they should last a lifetime. Their original shellac finish in good shape, so it will be up to you whether you want to refinish them or not. The underside of one lid looks like it has been roughed up slightly.
This set is still in Japan, it has not been refurbished in our Colorado shop. This is why we can offer it at a discounted rate. Please refer to the photos, as we do not have additional information.
This is a Vintage product.
