This nice goban set came to Baduk Club from a private home in Osaka. The seller says, "I've been sorting through some items that were in my parents' house." It includes a spruce board, go bowls, and slate & shell stones.

The go board is 14cm thick, an average size. It stands about 26cm tall with legs on. It looks like Shin-kaya with a brilliant Shihou-masa style cut. This is a quarter-sawn board, and this particular cross-cut results in parallel lines on all 6 sides of the board. This kind of cut is the highest regarded for fine boards, not normally possible except in the case of the thickest trees. It is most likely Alaskan Spruce, which grows faster and larger.

The corners and edges are quite clean, so it is in excellent shape. A fresh paste-wax coating can still be a good idea to help it slowly adjust, especially if your climate is less humid than Japan. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more about caring for this board. It comes with its original paperboard cover (not in great shape).

The orange-brown bowls have great lines and are most likely Keyaki, but could be something similar like a type of mulberry. Although they were not measured, they appear size XL based on their footprint on the board as well as their ability to hold the stones with some room to spare.

The stones are slate and shell, but were not measured or counted. They appear to be size 25-30, about 7mm-8mm thick.

    This is a Vintage product.

    Shipping Details:

FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to everywhere) is already included in the purchase price, a service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days. This is half of the overall cost (about $250-$300), but necessary to provide sufficient room for padding. The actual value for Customs Declarations and VAT will not include this shipping fee.

It is possible to save about $150 by downgrading to Japan Post Seamail. Please contact us with the Chat widget to request this at your own risk (accidents can happen during the 3 months in transit). First, please check the Japan Post website to verify that your country accepts Japan Post Surface.

In either case, please allow 1 week for the board to be packed and to clear Customs, then a tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
