This board was acquired from a Go and Shogi shop in Kanagawa with an excellent reputation. They are a well-established and trustworthy shop, and their opinion is that it is the much-sought-after Hyuga-Kaya from southern Japan.

The board is a single-piece of Kaya, cut in the a Quarter-sawn style (Ten-masa, or possibly Oi-masa). This cutting style maximizes the number of surfaces that will have straight lines (the top and sides) while showing off endgrain where you will sit and be able to view the beautiful heartwood. This is an ideal cut when the tree is not large enough to be cut Shihou-masa or Tenchi-masa style.

Kaya is quite dense, so at 13.1 kilograms it is far heavier than a board of pine or spruce made of the same thickness. It also carries a sweet scent particular to that type of wood. The board stands about 25cm tall with the legs on. The legs are a warm color similar to the board, so they are most likely also made of Kaya.

The edges and corners are in great shape, as it is protected by a paulownia lid. The grid-lines are hand-lacquered tachimori, and it is in perfect condition. The board was likely resurfaced, so it looks and feels like a new board. The unfortunate exception is that some cracks have formed. One of these cracks does appear on the surface just slightly, for about 2.5cm, as you can see at the top of the second photo.

The board was most likely resurfaced, but was not able to be sold due to the defect of the cracks, and left in storage for a long time. It is hard to know how these cracks will react to a change in climate as they leave Japan - please visit our Care Instructions to learn more about helping a board acclimate slowly to a new environment. Due to this issue we have discounted the price, and it will be sold as-is (which is the case with all of our Vintage products).
