This thick goban set came to Baduk Club from a private home in Toyama.
The board is 17.5cm thick, which is very large. It stands 29.5cm tall with 12cm legs. It comes with a handmade cloth cover. It looks like Katsura, based on the color, but the weight of 15kg points towards Matsu (pine). It has a Kiura cut, which provides straight lines on the sides. The endgrain shows off the heart of the tree where the players sit. This cutting style is known by woodworkers as Plain-sawn.
The board itself is in good shape. The corners and edges look good, but it has been used, as you can tell by the small indentations in the playing surface where players laid their stones aggressively. Also some of the legs have been scuffed, probably by human shoes.
The orange-brown bowls have great lines. They are probably Keyaki (zelkova), but good be cherry or a kind of mulberry. They look size XL.
The stones are slate and shell. It looks like a full set but they were not measured or counted. They look like size 30 to 34 (about 8mm - 9.5mm) with a nice creamy patina from age.
All together, this set weighs 20kg.
This is a Vintage product.
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to everywhere) is already included in the purchase price for free, a service that reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days.
It may be possible to downgrade to Surface shipping by removing the legs and sending them separately with the bowls and stones in a second parcel. Please contact us to request this, as it is done at your own risk of shipping damage.
In either case, please allow a week for the board to be packed and to clear Customs, then a tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
