This set comes from an Go & Shogi dealer in Kagawa, Japan.
The board is very dense, and has a warm tone. It weighs 15kg, which is quite a lot for a board that is only 14.8cm thick. It stands 27cm tall with legs. The endgrain is beautiful and wavy, and the growth lines are thin. The cut is flat-grain style (kiura) which puts amazing waves in the center of the grid. This plain-sawn board shows off the heart of the tree where the players sit, while showing straight lines along the sides. Some white wax residue is a good sign that the board has been cared for. The feet have proud shoulders, a sure sign of quality. One corner has blemishes, which you will see in the photos.
The bowls look like Keyaki (zelkova) soaked in a dark coloring agent. They could be Mulberry or something similar. They have their original shellac finish.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 28 (7mm thick). There are 181 white (1 spare), and they look snow-grade. There are 181 black, which are slightly larger - this is common to account for black's slimming effect. The clamshell could use a proper cleaning, so please visit our Care Instructions to learn about that.
