This go set came to Baduk Club from a vintage shop in Nagasaki, Japan.
The board is dense and has the warm yellow-orange tone of Kaya. The endgrain is beautiful and wavy, and the growth lines are thin. The cut is flat-grain style (kiura) which puts amazing waves in the center of the grid - in this case they appear like misty mountains in a watercolor painting. The plain-sawn board shows off the heart of the tree where the players sit, while showing straight lines along the sides.
The board is nearly unused. It comes with a cloth cover and a paulownia lid. The lid may have some cracks (it can be reglued), but has done its job to protect the corners and edges of the board.
The bowls look like Mountain Mulberry. They have their original shellac finish.
The stones are slate and shell, about size 32 (9mm thick). The clamshell could use a proper cleaning, so please visit our Care Instructions to learn about that.
