This Goban set came to Baduk Club from a private home in Hyogo, Japan. The owner says that he purchased the set new for $1000 some years ago.
The board has a warm-color heartwood that is a consistent orange/red. This points towards Katsura but could be Matsu. It is a Kiura cut, the most preferred of Center cut when the tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This is a Plain-sawn cutting style, which shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 20cm tall with legs. It was well-kept, without major defects.
The bowls are Keyaki, but the urushi lacquer finish makes them look a bit like Pagoda wood. The stones are slate and shell but were not measured or counted. They look like standard stones about 7-8mm thick (size 28-30).
