This awesome go set came to Baduk Club from an antique shop in Kagawa, Japan.
The board is 17.7cm thick, and stands 30cm tall on legs. It has an even yellow color typical of Shinkaya (Alaskan Spruce). It is a quarter-sawn board, a Tenchi-masa cut. This cutting style is one of the highest rated, as it creates straight lines on 4 of the board's surfaces with some decorative crossgrain on the sides. Such a cut is only possible with a tree of immense diameter.
The board is in great condition, with nice edges and corners thanks to a paulownia lid. It has dovetailed corners, fit together without any nails. The skirt of the lid may be slightly short on one side, as the board seems more weathered along the bottom edge there.
The bowls are the real star of the this set. They are Kurokaki (black persimmon, or ebony) with a brilliant contrast of light and dark grain. They have their original shellac finish in good shape. At roughly 1kg each, they are finished products (not raw lumber) under 5kg so there should not be a problem with Customs.
The stones are slate and shell. There are 180 of each color, roughly size 34 (please see the photos for measurements).
FedEx International Priority shipping from Japan (to nearly anywhere) is already included. This service reduces the actual transit time to only 5 business days, and also allows more room for padding in order to avoid shipping damage. Please allow a week for Customs preparations, then a FedEx tracking number will be provided that you can use to sign up for notifications.
Because of the quality of this set, Surface shipping is not recommended, but it is possible (in 2 parcels with Japan Post) if you wish to reduce the cost by about $120. Contact us with the chat widget to make such arrangements.
