This thick goban set came to Baduk Club from an antique shop in Chiba, Japan. It includes a go board, slate and shell stones, go bowls, as well as a paulownia box for the bowls and a paulownia lid for the board.
The go board is 15cm thick. It stands about 27cm tall with legs on. It looks like Matsu (pine), but could be Hiba or Beech or something similar. The plain-sawn style shows off the endgrain of the tree where the players sit, and results in parallel lines on the sides. Heartwood forms patterns under the playing grid. This Kiura cut is the most preferred when the tree is not large enough to be Quarter-sawn. The corners and edges are quite clean, so it is in good shape.
The year 1975 is writteen on the underside, along with the original owner's name. The legs are red-orange because they are made of Katsura. The paulownia lid needs to be reglued. The endgrain seems a bit dirty, but will likely clean up with a dry cotton cloth (otherwise, try turpentine). The red/orange bowls are Cherry, with beautiful lines and heathering, Size XL based on their footprint on the board as well as their ability to hold the stones with some room to spare.
The stones are full set of slate and shell. The stones look size 30-32 (8mm-9mm) but were not measured with calipers.
