This goban came to Baduk Club from a furniture reseller in Kagawa, Japan. It could easily be mistaken for Kaya, but we believe it to be Shinkaya.
The board is 17.5cm thick, and stands 30cm tall on legs. It has an even yellow color and it weighs 14kg. It is a quarter-sawn board, a Shihou-masa cut. This is the absolute highest rated cutting style for go boards, as it creates straight lines on all of the surfaces. This is only possible with the largest of trees. There are nice waves to the endgrain, reminiscent of Kaya.
The surface of the board is easy on the eyes and no cross-grains interfere with the clean look. It has a traditional raised-lacquer grid. The board edges and corners are in excellent condition. Some white wax residue on the sides is a good sign that the board was cared for, and will clear up with reapplication of wax.
The paulownia lid has done its job to protect the board. It has a patina from age and some odd coloration where some square items were stored on top of it for a long time.
