This Japanese goban was shipped to our Colorado workshop, where I treated it with a Monkey Wax (a linseed oil and beeswax mix) while listening to the Zen Mind podcast. Although it took a week to cure, the board gained protection and luster.
The go board appears to be Hiba, Spruce, or Pine in good condition. It is a hagi board, made of a sequence of joined pieces which helps keep the warping to a minimum (there is a slight warp). It weighs 3 kilograms and has a light tone. The grid has worn a little, as one would expect with a used item. The edges and are good but there is a dented corner. In addition one corner was splitting and needed to be chamfered.
The back is in excellent shape because the board has plastic feet, so a 9x9 or 13x13 grid could be added there. Unfortunately one foot is missing and will need to be replaced (with a furniture pad or a piece of felt or something similar).
