This go board is an outstanding find. Complete with an autograph, calligraphy, and inscription, it is also of a fine construction and in great shape.
This board is a warm brown/orange color, typical of Katsura. The grid is traditional raised lacquer, which shines in the glare of the light.
The construction is very old-fashioned but sturdy, with mortice and tenon joints instead of hinges. This is nice because there won't be hinges to scratch a table, and the reverse side is available with a Shogi board. A hand-painted set of shogi pieces is included. It comes with its original box and info card, and is in excellent condition.
On the shogi side is an autograph and inscription. According to this reddit thread, it was presented as a gift to a Mr. Takei in 1965. The autograph is a bit unclear, but was probably an active Go or Shogi professional at that time. The calligraphy above the autograph seems to be "Desire without covetousness," a reference to the Confucian Analects.
The board was treated with Monkey Butter in our Colorado workshop, and tape was applied to the outer box.
