This 17.3cm go board was refurbished in our Colorado workshop, including a coat of special linseed oil and later a coat of Monkey Wax. Photos from the refurbishing process can be found here:
The board is lovely, and the playing surface is in really good shape. It is Shinkaya (Alaskan Spruce) with a consistent yellow/brown color. It has a traditional grid made of raised lacquer.
The cut is Shihou-masa, a quarter-sawn cut that results in straight lines on as many of the sides as possible with minimal crossgrain. You can see the log's growth rings on the endgrain. In carpentry terms this would be called a Quarter-sawn board. Some cross-grain patterns do appear on one side.
The edges are pretty good, with some rounding on the corners from impacts over time. Defects are visible in the photos, so please refer to those. Foam inserts have been added to the corners of the box for protection during shipping.
The board weighs 13kg with legs, about 12.2kg without legs.
The legs will ship separately, please expect an additional shipping notification for them. They were also treated with Monkey Wax and cured. They fit easily into their mortises, so you may want to wrap the tenons with paper or painters tape if a snug fit is desired.
This is a vintage item.
