Straight from Japan, this Shogi set is a nice vintage find. The pieces have been carved and ink laid in the depressions for a striking appearance.
These proper starting positions show a full set of 40 pieces. There is an extra pawn which seems to have been chewed on by someone's pet. Some pieces have cursive letters on the reverse side, because they get different abilities in the offensive third of the board.
The set comes with its original paperboard box. The box had damaged corners, so those were taped for additional integrity.
A plastic case has some superficial defects. But it still helps keep the pieces secure, the empty case can act as a pair of lids for holding prisoners. These prisoners can be returned to the board, which is part of the complexity of the game.
