This set of go equipment is dreamy.
The stones are size 36 slate & shell, the same thickness used for major title tournaments in Japan. The bowls are Kaya, featuring wavy grains, red resin, and a sweet scent.
The 180 white pieces are Snow-grade Mexican clamshell. They have been cleaned per our Care Instructions, beginning with a week-long soak in h2o2, followed by a rinse with distilled water. They have not been buffed with wax, as they seem very smooth already.
The 181 black stones are Slate. They were washed with soapy water and rinsed with distilled water. They have not been buffed with mineral oil, we leave this choice to you. You can see from how they fill the bowls that the black are slighty larger than the white - this is preferred to account for black's slimming effect. When they are side-by-side on the board they will look the same size.
The bowls are Kaya. This wood is the premier wood for go boards. Kaya is not often used for go bowls, despite being distinctive and beautiful, primarily because the red resin can stain the clamshell stones - for this reason the bowls must have a thick protective finish. Please be aware of this if you choose to refinish the bowls, and use several layers of shellac or polyurethane to coat the raw wood. In the meantime, the original finish is in outstanding shape. In addition, both bowls have small liners at the bottom to keep the stones from rubbing away the interior finish. The bowls are XXL size (about 16cm wide and 10cm tall with lids on), and they fit the stones nicely.
This is a Vintage product.
