This set includes gorgeous go bowls and refurbished slate & clamshell go stones.
The wood has a pleasant brown-red tone with grain like rosewood. Quince is sometimes called Indian Rosewood in Japan, and has great longevity. These bowls feature a maker's mark on the underside, so they were probably lathed by Kaishi. There looks to be a surface defect, probably an interaction with water at some point. They are XL size, please see the photos for measurements and condition.
The 180 white pieces are Snow-grade clamshell, with incredibly dense lines. They were soaked in hydrogen peroxide for a week before being rinsed with distilled water. They have a slightly creamy patina, so they may be Japanese in origin.
The 181 black stones are slate, and are slightly larger than the white; this is usually preferred so that they appear the same size side-by-side. They were washed with soapy water and rinsed with distilled water, but have not been buffed with mineral oil as we leave this choice to you.
This is a Vintage item.
