This board came to Baduk Club from a go parlor in Tokyo that shut down. It was shipped to Colorado for refurbishing. It is a single piece of dense wood with an even red-orange tone throughout, so we are confident that it is Katsura.
The board has a raised lacquer grid, which was saved. We sanded the bottom and sides, cleaned the playing surface, and treated it with Monkey Butter (mineral oil and beeswax).
The board is 7cm thick, and has a Kiura-itame cut. This is a plain-sawn board, and the cutting style provides straight lines on the sides, while showing off the endgrain on the ends where the players sit. Some cross grain on the surface of the board is a kind of fingerprint depending on the heartwood of the tree. The nice thing about a board this thick is that it can be used as a table board without the legs, if desired.
The legs are original to this board, and have been numbered to match their mortises. To make them fit more snugly, you may want to add some newspaper or tape around the tenons.
This is a vintage item.
