This thick set came to Baduk Club from a go and shogi dealer in Kanagawa, Japan.
There are 181 black pieces are slate, about 11.5mm. The 180 white pieces are clamshell, about 11.4mm. The white stones appwared to be snow-grade, but that grading system generally only refers to Mexican clamshell. With back-lit photos we can see a very high density and deep orange color in these stones, so we believe they are Japanese in origin.
The go bowls are Quince, size XXL. They fit the stones comfortably, and could probably handle an even larger set. They have their original finish in very good condition. Quince is a dense wood with great longevity. They are about 16.5cm wide and 10.5cm tall. A video was taken to show their color-changing aspect in the sunlight.
